Central Province   Just as any other maritime province in Papua New Guinea, the economy of Central Province is largely based on fisheries resources and agriculture. Most households in the province derive their income from the selling of fish and farming. It is estimated that most, if not all of the costal inhabitants live just below the poverty line

  Roku Village

Roku village is situated on the coastline along the east of Napa Napa road just outside of Port Moresby. It is about 30-40 minutes drive from the city to the village site. The vegetation is mainly savanna grassland dotted with eucalyptus trees that dominate the inland areas, while mangrove swamps and tidal flood areas are the main vegetation of the coastline. The soil is generally poor and rocky with small pockets suitable for low intensity subsistence gardening.

According to a population survey, there are a total of 1,200 people in Roku village. The people of Roku are from the triba group called Koitabu of Central Province. The social activities of the area are organized around the United Church calendar of events together with their traditional bride payments and mortuary feasts. The organization of the village is under three distinct groupings..

(i) Clan groupings where the tracing of common ancestry is the bond.

(ii) Church hierarchy using representatives from each family grouping (sub-clan) who then elect executive office bearers and;

(iii) Government where people elect the prime representatives (the ward councilor), the ward development committee (WDC) and the village court magistrate and peace officers. The only WDC official that is not elected by the people but elected by the ward councilor is the village recorder. The Community Health Worker (CHW) and the schoolteacher come under this system but are appointed by their respective departments.

There are two staple foods consumed by the people of Roku village. Seafood mostly fish are caught by the local fishermen and shells gathered by the women and children provide the bulk of the protein consumed. Hunters bring back bush wallabies caught in the grassland supplement the reliance on the sea. The most dominant root vegetable consumed by the villagers is Manoita or commonly known as Tapioca or Cassava with some sweet potato and yams. Other crops such as Aibika, Sugar cane, Pineapple, Watermelon and Pumpkin are also grown.

Generally for the months December to April/May, the northwest monsoon brings enough rain to give the people a short gardening season. The rest of the year sees the south-east trade winds bring the dry season, drying out the ground, the grass and eventually the water wells causing much suffering amongst the people.
