Central Province   Just as any other maritime province in Papua New Guinea, the economy of Central Province is largely based on fisheries resources and agriculture. Most households in the province derive their income from the selling of fish and farming. It is estimated that most, if not all of the costal inhabitants live just below the poverty line

  Gaire Village

Gaire village is situated in the Central Province about 45-50 minutes drive east of Port Moresby along the Magi Highway. The road is good to travel as it is sealed all the way to the turn off of the village. When reaching the turn off to the village, the road is unsealed and it takes about a kilometer drive to reach the actual village community. The land area from the junction to the central village is generally plain and swampy. The main sources of drinking water are from the rain or the nearby streams. However, during the dry periods from May-August water can pose a problem for most families.

Within the village, there are five (5) main clans with a total population of more than 3000 people. The language spoken is primarily Motu with Pidgin as the secondary language. There are several different religious denominations present within the village but the main denomination is the United Church. There is also a primary school from grades 1-8 located within the village.

Due to the good road system from Port Moresby to the Central villages, town workers from Gaire village are able to travel daily into the city and back. Both tele-communication (B-mobile and Digicel) are present within the area enabling communication to take place. There is also electricity present in the form of EASY PAY.
