The SEASMART Fisher & Fishery Development (FFD) component fisher training equips fishers and community resource owners with the necessary knowledge, skills and techniques required to manage and implement an environmentally sustainable aquarium industry.

The SEASMART FFD component provides fisher training on aquarium fishing tech-niques and management at local village level. The training is carried out on site at the fisher's newly selected Fishery Management Area (FMA). The fishers must be from and live in the FMA community in which they are fishing.

Fishers are trained in net collection, proper post-harvest handling and holding, docu-mentation and order management. The training is designed and adapted to address the needs of the fishers to meet market demands based on the species mix and vol-umes in their specific FMA.

The SEASMART Fisher & Fishery Development training team also assists the fishers to develop their business skills, such as quality control in documentation, post-harvesting handling, packing, developing and maintaining reliable communications and interactions with their buyers and implementing sound and well documented financial transactions.

As environmental sustainability becomes a prime concern, the training imparts meth-ods and practices that quite securely contain proper and safe harvesting of resources without environmental damages. The construction of fishing gear, uses, materials and designs that enhance catch quality and are environmentally-friendly are key to what we do.
