The global aquarium market has long been keenly interested in PNG marine aquarium organisms, however significant obstacles have hindered the development of the industry thus far. Over the past several years, many aquarium industry operators and other business investors have researched and explored the possibility of setting up aquarium fish export operations to supply the growing international demand for marine aquarium organisms. The capital city of PNG, Port Moresby, has the country’s only international airport, thus requiring marine aquarium organisms collected from around the country be transported by domestic airlines to Port Moresby before being exported to market countries.

There are only two international airlines in PNG as compared to well over a dozen different airlines in the competing countries of Indonesia and Philippines. Aquarium market countries, driven by economics, have continued to support those countries where cost of freight and livestock is much cheaper by comparison. Another major chellenge is the high cost of doing business in Port Moresby; operational costs are higher than in any other competing country due to real estate and technology development conditions, e.g., high cost of internet, warehouse and housing rentals, etc. |
